We always have a choice. We can decide to be at the effect of whatever is happening to us from outside forces and get caught up in blame and being a victim or we can chose to take responsibility for how we respond. A phrase my mentor Katie Hendricks uses to refer to choosing to take responsibility is Response-ability.
In personal relationships and at work, where team building is important, shifting out of blame and into response-ability will support you in creating healthy, strong relationships.
